One Room Challenge: Week Six -Upstairs Landing

Welcome back to the final installment of the ORC.  It's Week Six so that means it's time to reveal the goods baby. My design objective was to turn this upstairs landing into a more cohesive, lived in space.

There was no major reno that happened here. In the end, I didn't even paint the bookshelves after Shannon wisely pointed out that they really need about 3 weeks to cure before they can be loaded again. 

Instead, I really focused on balance, texture color and light. The Turkish carpet is for sure the statement piece of the room.  It adds warmth and color, and breaks up the conflicting centerlines of the desk and shelves.  

Although she is not the prettiest deb at the ball, the heavier chair on the end also balances things out and is looking a lot better with the new cushion and cover, and besides is very comfortable. 

I got this paper globe at a Soko Hardware in Japantown for $7.50, that's right, seven-fifty. I love it. They have globes up to 42" in diameter that are just fantastic. This room gets so much light during the day that I just use this as a big moon nightlight in the evening. I made the pull and pom pom for an unexpected fun touch. Both my boys like to give it a little bat as they walk past it.

Of course the black lampshade I ordered didn't arrive on time so this burlap one is just a placeholder for photographing.  The black on black will be cool I think. I also added a task light on the other end to shake things up a bit. I know some would like to see a pair here but I don't go that way. 

I did a bunch of rearranging of things in the shelves. In general I like to style my shelves with personal items that I've found, inherited or my kids have made, that's why I have piles of rocks and stuff :)

This landing has definitely become a nice hang out zone. I wouldn't have gotten it done without the motivation of linking up every Thursday. If you missed the weekly progress you can find it here.
