One Room Challenge: Week Six -Upstairs Landing

Welcome back to the final installment of the ORC.  It's Week Six so that means it's time to reveal the goods baby. My design objective was to turn this upstairs landing into a more cohesive, lived in space.

There was no major reno that happened here. In the end, I didn't even paint the bookshelves after Shannon wisely pointed out that they really need about 3 weeks to cure before they can be loaded again.

Instead, I really focused on balance, texture color and light. The Turkish carpet is for sure the statement piece of the room.  It adds warmth and color, and breaks up the conflicting centerlines of the desk and shelves.

Although she is not the prettiest deb at the ball, the heavier chair on the end also balances things out and is looking a lot better with the new cushion and cover, and besides is very comfortable.

I got this paper globe at a Soko Hardware in Japantown for $7.50, that's right, seven-fifty. I love it. They have globes up to 42" in diameter that are just fantastic. This room gets so much light during the day that I just use this as a big moon nightlight in the evening. I made the pull and pom pom for an unexpected fun touch. Both my boys like to give it a little bat as they walk past it.

Of course the black lampshade I ordered didn't arrive on time so this burlap one is just a placeholder for photographing.  The black on black will be cool I think. I also added a task light on the other end to shake things up a bit. I know some would like to see a pair here but I don't go that way.

I did a bunch of rearranging of things in the shelves. In general I like to style my shelves with personal items that I've found, inherited or my kids have made, that's why I have piles of rocks and stuff :)

This landing has definitely become a nice hang out zone. I wouldn't have gotten it done without the motivation of linking up every Thursday. If you missed the weekly progress you can find it here.

Huge thanks to Linda for dreaming up this little adventure and to all the people who checked in along the way. I love to hear from you! Be sure to check out all the other linking participants here.

And finally, just for fun here are some before and afters.

Such a brilliant use of space! The new desk and runner makes a world of difference. I love how you maximized design and functionality of a pass through space.

What a wonderfully eclectic space you have made. It looks so comfy and lived in with undeniable style. Love it! Love the desk and the rug is amazing. Your space is in my top 3 out of ALL of them.

I think you did an awesome job! What a great way to use space. Love the rocks in the bookcase and the special notes you've framed. That, to me, makes a house a home. I hadn't followed your week to week progress until today and the scanner made me chuckle. My husband is also a scanner 'enthusiast'. I think the black shade is going to be amazing on the lamp, bummer it didn't arrive on time, but I can just picture how it will look. Fun, fun, fun!

The room is fantastic. What a jewel of a space. I feel like we have a similar design aesthetic. It's fantastic. Bravo. p.s.- Can I have that map? And the rug too?

I adore that table and I'm still so in love with that rug. The space came together just beautifully!

Astonishing transformation! I can see why you said that the original desk was the wrong scale--now I see the one you replced with it, I can't imagine anything more perfect. That is a great desk. And I can totally see how that big chair balances that side of the "room." Beautifully done.

I followed you through out the ORC because, to me, this space is completely magical. It is even more so, now. Thanks for participating and letting us all see inside your beautiful home.

I was thinking the same thing. You're pool house came out fantastic. Seems to me that you have better Craig'slist karma than me though.

Of course, your blog rocks and is a must read :)

Thanks Cheryl :) I think you're right, it does make a space feel more personal, I'm always sort of amazed when I hear people say they want their house to look like a hotel. Does your hubby know all the codes? It can be kind of addicting, I have to watch myself or my family thinks I'm a little cookoo. -Caitlin

Wow. I'm super flattered. Thanks. -Caitlin

It gets some of the best sun of the house so I'm glad to be able to sit at that desk and thankful not to be walking through the mishmash anymore.

You have the perfect mix of personal items and books -- it looks real, not styled. Still can't get over the long desk was a street find. Love your rug! It makes the space. Great job!

Holy cow! This looks awesome! That desk, the rug (#$%%!@) and the $7.50 light....amazing! I also love your organic styling on the bookshelves...it looks so effortless (even though we all know it's not!). Well done and thanks for your cheerleading over this project as well...I'd still be sanding my daughter's vanity if it wasn't for you! :)

lovely, rug, long desk, etc
regarding painting the bookcase, what about painting just the facing to "frame" your collections?

C a i t l i n said...

That would be a whole lot easier!! I'd like to see the whole thing a medium toned grey, you?
